The opening round of the Wirral 100 2009 season got underway at a mild yet blustery Anglesey Circuit. Both riders were feeling confident after completing numerous testing laps on the previous day.
Unfortunately the testing form would not transfer to racing with Darren high-siding out of the first race while tussling with the much-improved Jaime Harris as both riders tried to catch the eventual winner Connor Behan. With his confidence knocked, and some ill-fitting substitute leathers, he battled to 5th. Jonty finished race 1 with a decent 9th but after a poor start. After getting held up and narrowly missing many fallers, he finished the red-flagged second race in 18th.
The first race of the year saw Bryn Owen unceremoniously thrown from the bike at well in excess of 100mph. He was fortunate to escape with a broken toe and some bruising following a mechanical failure that caused the Bryn Taff Racing Honda to high-side. Mallory Park's first turn, Gerrards, is taken in 5th gear at about 110mph. Unsurprisingly, the bike was severely damaged with all the bodywork in pieces and the rear wheel buckled. Although Bryn does have a spare bike, he felt that he was not in a fit state to safely race and so retired. He plans to attend the next meeting at Cadwell in April.
Bryn will be commencing his racing season this weekend at the the Leicestershire circuit. He enters a class that has almost tripled in size since last season with 30 competitors. Following a strong performance at the test, the experienced multiple-champion hopes to put the mechanical woes of last season behind him and put in a solid performance. Qualifying will be on Friday with racing on Saturday and Sunday.
Unfortunately Darren will be unable to compete at this round of Thundersport championship but hopes to participate later in the season.
Darren and Bryn had a worthwhile time at the test. Both riders were testing the latest specification BTR RS125s and both gave very positive feedback.
Bryn Taff: "We are very confident ahead of the first round. Although no official times were released, Bryn and Darren were visible the fastest riders at the official testing and we hope they will be out there fighting for the top spot in the race at Mallory Park as well. Both are very comfortable with the bike and the recent tuning has proven to be very competitive."
Jonty will comptete in the Wirral 100 and select Thundersport meetings this season, The 2006 Kawasaki was originally campaigned by Phil Seton in the British Supersport series and is of corresponding specification. The suspension is a mix of Ohlins forks and a race-spec WP shock. The Carbon/Kevlar bodywork is by F-Hot and follows the look of the World Supersport bikes with an aerodynamic seat hump. A fully tuned supersport-spec engine, along with a custom built MHP exhaust, produces over 130bhp. This should see Jonty pushing further up the field and hopefully improving on his best result of 7th.
